Last-Minute Drama: How Poly's Shocking Goal Stunned Wilson and Changed the Game Forever!

The Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits edged out the Wilson Bruins in a hard-fought boys soccer match, clinching a 1-0 victory that keeps them in contention for the top spot in the Moore League. Sponsored coverage of Long Beach Poly Athletics is provided by former Jackrabbits Wendell “WoWo” Moe, Jr. and Tyson Ruffins, while Long Beach Wilson Athletics is supported by Joel Bitonio, Class of 2009.
For 73 minutes, it seemed both teams would settle for a tie. The game was marked by intense defensive strategies and a series of near-scoring opportunities. Wilson started strong, with Manny Alonso and Andres Rocha taking the first two shots of the match in the 17th and 18th minutes. Rocha's attempt was particularly close, striking the post but failing to find the back of the net. As the game progressed, Poly struggled to create scoring chances, with their first real opportunity coming in the 20th minute after a foul led to a free kick, which Damian Gonzalez sent wide.
Wilson's coach, CJ Brewer, was pleased with his team's possession and offensive pressure throughout the first half. “We dominated possession with the ball on their end,” Brewer said, emphasizing the team’s ability to control the game statistically. Despite their efforts, the teams went into halftime scoreless, leaving the outcome open.
The second half saw Wilson continue to apply pressure, firing off shots but unable to convert any into goals. However, it was Poly who finally broke the deadlock. After a foul set up a crucial set piece, Carlos Casillas Jr. delivered a cross into the box where James Alonso met it with a header. The ball deflected off a Wilson defender before rolling past the goalkeeper, sealing the victory for Poly.
“I was just trying to get a goal,” Alonso said after the match. “Trying to contribute to our team.”
This win positions the Jackrabbits second in league standings, just two points behind Millikan and two points ahead of Lakewood, intensifying the race as the season approaches its climax.
Coach Carlos Casillas praised the rivalry, acknowledging the high stakes, “It’s always a big game and they want to win. We want to win and I just always expect a hard game. But it was a great game today.”
Looking ahead, Poly will face Jordan on Monday, while Wilson will take on Cabrillo. The final week of the Moore League is critical as playoff spots begin to solidify. “Our goal is to always win the Moore League,” said Casillas. “Our aim is to get to CIF. Right now we’re fighting for it. Of course, we depend on some scores but at the end of the day, we look forward to it.”
