Schreiner University's Shocking Move: Women’s Flag Football Is Here—Meet the Controversial New Coach!

KERRVILLE, Texas – Schreiner University is expanding its commitment to women's athletics with the addition of a new sport: women's flag football. This initiative marks the transition of the program from a club team to official NCAA Division III status, alongside its existing beach volleyball program.
The university's inaugural head coach for women's flag football, Colby McCoy, shared insights into the significance of this development. “Just seeing where Schreiner was when I first got here to now, and then being part of something that’s kind of historical here, is really special to me,” McCoy said. His enthusiasm is evident as he embraces the opportunity to lead a collegiate program that is gaining momentum nationwide.
McCoy highlighted an exciting facet of the sport's growth: "It’s going to be in the Olympics in 2028, which is really exciting." He pointed out that NFL teams across the country are increasingly sponsoring women's flag football initiatives. For example, the Houston Texans and the Dallas Cowboys are actively promoting the sport in their respective areas. “It’s just exploding, and it’s exciting to be part of that movement,” McCoy remarked.
Confidence in his selection as head coach is high, as McCoy reflects on the team's past success. Under his guidance, the Mountaineers secured the 2025 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s flag football showcase championship. He believes the transition to NCAA status is an opportunity to further elevate the program. "Whenever I was coaching the team, it’s just the most fun I’ve had in a really long time,” he added. “Working with the young women and making them better — I’m really competitive, so being able to take a team, compete and win is a feeling I’m going to continue to chase throughout my coaching career.”
As the program gears up for this pivotal transition, McCoy outlined his plans for structure and development in the coming year. “I want to up the practices, spend more time in the weight room, and really dive into the fundamentals of flag football,” he explained. This includes focusing on essential skills such as footwork, flag-pulling agility, and hand-eye coordination, ensuring the team is well-prepared for the official NCAA competition starting in spring 2027.
The team's final season as a club program is set to commence, with two home games planned, the first scheduled for 1 p.m. on January 28. McCoy also expressed a desire for expanded opportunities at the high school level in South Texas, suggesting that increased support could lead to more athletes progressing to collegiate competition. “Would it help to have more flag football high school teams in the San Antonio area, South Texas in general? One hundred percent,” he stated.
McCoy's vision for the women's flag football program at Schreiner University exemplifies a broader trend toward recognizing and promoting women's sports. With the backing of both the university and the growing popularity of women's flag football nationwide, there is optimism about the future of the sport and the opportunities it holds for young female athletes.
