JT Toppin's Stunning Stats: Is He the Next Kevin Durant? You Won't Believe What He Did!

In a stunning upset on the hardwood, Texas Tech took down the sixth-ranked Houston Cougars, thanks in large part to an incredible performance from junior forward JT Toppin. Toppin dominated the game, scoring 31 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, solidifying his place as one of the standout players in college basketball this season.

This impressive outing marked Toppin's third game this season where he scored at least 30 points and pulled down double-digit rebounds against opponents ranked in the Associated Press Top 25. According to basketball analyst Jared Berson, the only other players in the past 20 years to achieve this feat three times are former stars Marvin Bagley III in the 2017-18 season and Kevin Durant during the 2006-07 season.

Toppin's shooting stats were notable as he made 12 of 24 attempts from the field but struggled from beyond the arc, going 0 for 5 on three-pointers. Despite this, he still managed to contribute significantly with 21 points coming from other areas of the court, in addition to his 12 rebounds and three assists. Earlier this season, Toppin had first showcased his scoring prowess against ranked teams in a close loss to 14th-ranked Illinois where he netted 35 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. He followed that performance with another strong showing against 17th-ranked Arkansas, scoring 30 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.

Although Toppin was nearly on the verge of joining this exclusive club against 11th-ranked BYU, he fell short with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Currently, Toppin ranks eighth nationally with an average of 22.1 points per game, and sixth in rebounds with 10.9 per game. His consistency is evident with four consecutive games scoring 20 or more points and achieving double-digit rebounds in ten out of the last 12 games.

As a result of this victory, Texas Tech improved its season record to 16-4, positioning themselves at 6-1 in Big 12 Conference play, placing them in a strong second position in the conference standings. With their recent performance, they are set to face UCF next Saturday as they look to maintain their momentum in the competitive landscape of college basketball.
