Retired Teachers Reveal Shocking Secrets at Monthly Luncheon—You Won’t Believe What They’re Planning!

In the heart of Arcata, California, a series of engaging community events is set to enrich the lives of residents this February. From nature journaling sessions to a family literacy party, and even a science lecture, these gatherings aim to foster learning, creativity, and community spirit.

This morning, the Friends of the Arcata Marsh will host its free monthly session titled “Nature Journaling at the Marsh.” Led by naturalist Lynn Jones, the session runs from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center. No pre-registration is necessary, but participants should arrive early as the session accommodates only the first 10 attendees who show up at 10 a.m. This event is open to all ages, provided participants can remain focused quietly for an extended period. The organization will supply clipboards and colored pencils, while attendees are encouraged to bring their own paper and writing tools. A pad to sit on or a folding chair is recommended, and binoculars and guidebooks are optional. However, note that heavy rain will cancel the event.

Meanwhile, families are invited to join a lively “Family Literacy Party” with local artist Claire Bent on January 31 at 11 a.m. at the Arcata Library, located at 500 Seventh St., Arcata. Sponsored by the Humboldt Literacy Project, this event promises engaging musical activities. Participants will enjoy a reading of “Beautiful Hands” by Kathryn Otoshi and Bret Baumgarten, and each family will have the chance to select a free book to take home. Following the reading, attendees will create large signs adorned with handprints and hearts to express gratitude to first responders, which will be displayed in the upcoming parade on February 1 at noon around Arcata Plaza. For additional information, you can contact the library at 707-822-5954.

For those keen on science, Malcolm Ridings, a recent graduate of Cal Poly Humboldt’s Environmental Science and Management program, will present a free lecture titled “How to Talk Gooder About Science Stuff” on February 4 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center. This lecture is part of the First Wednesday Lecture Series, organized by the Friends of the Arcata Marsh. Ridings will focus on effective science communication techniques and the essential knowledge needed to interpret the natural world. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions after the presentation. For those unable to attend in person, the lecture can also be viewed via Zoom at this link. For further inquiries, the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center can be reached at 707-826-2359.

Lastly, the California Retired Teachers Association, North Coast Division, will gather for its monthly lunch on February 12 at 11:30 a.m. at the Humboldt Unitarian Fellowship, located at 24 Fellowship Way, Bayside. This gathering will honor longstanding members, with a menu featuring both vegetarian and meat lasagna, accompanied by salads and desserts from C&C Catering. The cost to attend is $20, with Gold Star members attending for free. Reservations can be made by emailing Judy at [email protected] or calling 707-839-3983. The deadline for reservations is February 9. All retired teachers are welcome to join.

These upcoming events not only highlight the vibrant community spirit in Arcata but also emphasize the importance of education, creativity, and connection in today’s world. Whether you’re looking to express your artistic side, engage in science, or reconnect with fellow educators, there’s something for everyone to enjoy this month.
