You Won’t Believe How These Seniors Are Defying Age with Fitness: The Shocking Truth!

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — In a heartwarming blend of fitness and fellowship, the social hall at St. Louis Parish transforms three times a week into a vibrant gathering space for seniors eager to stay active. This initiative not only promotes physical health but also reinforces social connections among participants, many of whom are aged between 50 and 90 years old.
Led by local fitness instructor Linda Hoas, the classes draw an average of 40 participants who engage in a mix of calisthenics, stretches, and chair exercises. The sessions occur on Mondays and Tuesdays from 1 to 2 p.m., and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., costing just $1 per class. Hoas’ energetic leadership includes playing music to keep spirits high, while encouraging attendees to either stand or sit based on their comfort level.
Elaine Pace, an 83-year-old parishioner, has been attending the classes for three years, initially hesitant but now a regular. “I was in the choir when somebody suggested that I go to this exercise class,” she recounted. “I saw it in the church paper, but I thought, ‘Oh, this is just for old people who sit in a chair.’ But I figured to give it one shot, and I’ve been coming back ever since.”
During a recent visit by Detroit Catholic, the class was especially spirited, celebrating “Team Spirit Day” with many participants donning Detroit Lions gear. The atmosphere was electric, with Hoas motivating participants to engage fully in the exercises. “She’s so motivated and makes sure we have a good time,” Pace said. “I went to Vermont to visit my son, and he said he would take me to the YMCA for exercises, but we didn’t do a whole lot. We do more here than this young guy did. All because Linda has so much energy and keeps us engaged.”
Rosa Clancy, 82, joined the classes about two years ago after learning about them from a friend. Although she is not a parishioner, she appreciates the welcoming environment. “If I don’t move, I get stiff, and when I don’t do these exercises, there are times when I can’t get up and down the stairs,” Clancy explained. “Then one day, a friend told me about these classes, and I started coming with her.”
For Clancy, the benefits extend beyond physical activity. The camaraderie fostered in the classes significantly enhances her social life. “I look forward to coming to these classes,” she shared. “It gets me out of the house. Otherwise, I’m by myself all the time, with nobody around. So this helps me get out of the house and moving.”
The St. Louis Parish fitness classes exemplify the intersection of community and health, emphasizing the importance of both physical activity and social interaction as we age. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, ensuring they can engage fully in the routines. As the program continues to flourish, Hoas’ dedication to improving the quality of life for Clinton Township’s seniors is evident, making a positive impact on their well-being.
For those interested in joining, St. Louis Parish is located at 24415 Crocker Blvd., Clinton Township. These fitness classes provide not only a path to better physical health but also an opportunity for seniors to forge lasting friendships.
