Why This Year's Sunset Strides 5K Could Save Lives—And How You Can Get Involved Before It's Too Late!

On Saturday, March 14, NAMI Southwest Florida will host its eighth annual Sunset Strides 5K in downtown Fort Myers, a key event aimed at raising awareness and support for mental health issues in the community. The proceeds from this event will directly fund education, crisis intervention, peer-led services, and essential resources for those impacted by mental illness, underscoring the organization’s commitment to addressing mental health challenges.

The 5K walk will take participants on a picturesque route from Fort Myers Centennial Park to the Edison Bridge and back, all while enjoying the beautiful sunset. Day-of registration will commence at 4 p.m., leading up to the walk's official start at 6 p.m. This family-friendly event welcomes attendees of all ages, and even leashed pets are encouraged to join.

For those interested in participating, registration can be done individually or as part of a team at NAMIWalks.org/SouthwestFlorida. Additionally, various sponsorship opportunities are available, ranging from the Beacon of Hope Sponsor at $20,000, which includes a speaking role at the event, to the Supporter Sponsor level at $500. Each sponsorship level comes with promotional opportunities that support the event and the ongoing mission of NAMI.

“Sunset Strides is a keystone event in raising awareness for mental illness in our community,” said Vacharee Howard, CEO of NAMI Southwest Florida. “Every step we take together is a step toward ensuring no one walks alone on their mental health journey.”

In previous years, participants have walked not only for their personal journeys but also in memory of loved ones and as tributes to those who have supported them in their mental health battles. This year's event will not only focus on walking but will also serve as a platform to educate attendees about mental health. Walkers will learn to identify signs of mental health struggles and discover available resources to assist those in need.

Beyond the walk itself, participants can look forward to hearing empowering stories from community members, enjoying live music, and participating in a mental wellness resource fair once the walk concludes. This multifaceted approach not only highlights individual narratives but also seeks to foster a sense of community and solidarity among those affected by mental health issues.

NAMI Southwest Florida is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals facing mental illness and their families.
