NEW JERSEY (WABC) — A historic moment is set for New Jersey as Mikie Sherrill is poised to be sworn in as the state’s first female Democratic governor on Tuesday. This transition marks a significant milestone, as Sherrill's victory in the 2025 election, won by nearly 14 percentage points, signifies the first time in decades that New Jersey will have a Democratic governor serving a third consecutive term.

The 54-year-old former Navy pilot and four-term congresswoman is already signaling a shift in priorities, expressing her dissatisfaction with the current status quo. "We are going to very quickly show that we have a new agenda here in New Jersey," Sherrill stated, highlighting her intention to implement changes that resonate with the everyday concerns of New Jersey residents.

In a departure from tradition, Sherrill's inauguration will take place at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark, with a celebratory event planned at the American Dream complex in East Rutherford. On Sunday, during an appearance on ABC's "This Week," she critiqued the administration of former President Donald Trump, emphasizing that his attention should be on the economy rather than military deployments in American cities or the proposal to purchase Greenland. “Can you imagine the cost that that would be to everybody's pocketbook? And I can guarantee you, after spending a year and speaking to thousands of people across the state, that there is not one person in New Jersey that wakes up in the morning and says, 'gee, I hope today’s the day that the president dumps billions of dollars into buying Greenland, while my grocery store costs continue to go up,’” she remarked.

Sherrill recognizes that for the Democratic Party to maintain its electoral success in the upcoming midterms, candidates must stay connected to the electorate. Her commitment to addressing immediate concerns was evident during her participation in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day service event, where she was seen shoveling snow from a Camden sidewalk. Here, she tackled pressing issues, including the recent concerns surrounding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids. While she acknowledges the need for legal accountability, she emphasizes that law-abiding working immigrants deserve protection. "Here in New Jersey, we recently saw a 9-year-old was dropped off at school. They picked up his dad," Sherrill said. "I'm not clear if they had a plan for that child and who was going to pick him up at school. That's unacceptable."

On her first day in office, Sherrill has vowed to declare a state of emergency and will sign an executive order to freeze utility rate hikes, alongside other measures aimed at reducing energy costs in the long term. She understands that her initial actions will set the tone for her governorship, especially with the nation’s eyes on New Jersey as it prepares for the midterms.
