You Won't Believe How Social Media Came Together to Build This Disabled Friend a Home!

In a world where social media often amplifies negativity, a heartwarming story has emerged from the Ntsitshana community in Kwaaiman, just outside Mqanduli, South Africa. This tale revolves around the selfless act of a content creator, Vulikhaya Zilindlovu, known as Fish on various social media platforms, who has transformed the life of his friend, Mkhanyiseli Mfutye, a 33-year-old living with autism.

Zilindlovu, 34, and Mfutye grew up together, and their bond has only deepened over the years. Recognizing Mfutye’s struggles, Zilindlovu took to social media on September 30, 2022, to share Mfutye's story, which struck a chord with thousands. The response was overwhelming, leading to the launch of a humanitarian campaign that raised more than R150,000, approximately $8,000, to build a new home for Mfutye and his family.

The transformation has been significant, resulting in a new three-roomed brick house, completed last week, which Zilindlovu described as “of good quality, built by experienced builders.” However, while the physical change is remarkable, the emotional impact on Mfutye, who is often referred to as Nja—meaning "my buddy" in the local dialect, a name inherited from his late brother—has been profound. This new home not only restores his dignity but also enhances his confidence and sense of belonging.

Living previously in a crumbling hut with his sister, Nombuyiselo, 45, and five children, Mfutye faced relentless bullying and exclusion due to his disability. His isolation was compounded by the fact that he dropped out of school at a young age to escape the cruel jokes directed at him. “Mkhanyiseli is human like anyone and needs to be treated with respect,” Zilindlovu emphasized, highlighting the importance of compassion and understanding in their community.

Despite the impressive strides made, Zilindlovu noted that there is still work to be done. “The house is still lacking in amenities. It only has a bed and TV,” he said, adding that they require furniture, appliances, and other essentials to truly make the house a home. Nombuyiselo, overwhelmed with emotion, expressed her gratitude, stating, “Fish has given us a new lease on life. We are forever grateful for his kindness and generosity.”

This story stands as a testament to the power of community and social media as a force for good. While platforms are often criticized for spreading negativity, Zilindlovu’s initiative showcases how they can foster compassion and mobilize support for those in need. It also highlights the urgent necessity for social awareness around disabilities, encouraging respectful treatment and inclusion.

As the campaign continues to gain traction, it serves as a reminder of the profound impact that individual actions can have on the lives of others. With more amenities to secure and further support needed, Zilindlovu is determined to continue advocating for his friend, ensuring that his journey of resilience is met with the compassion and respect it deserves.
