Boston College Shocks Fans: You Won't Believe Why They Signed Saginaw Valley's QB McKenzie!

In a significant move for their football program, Boston College announced on Sunday evening the signing of former Saginaw Valley State quarterback Mason McKenzie. This transfer, confirmed by Allen Trieu of 247 Sports, brings the reigning Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Player of the Year to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. McKenzie’s addition comes at a crucial time for the Eagles, who are navigating a challenging quarterback landscape.

Head coach Bill O’Brien extended an official offer to McKenzie on December 19, 2025, and just over two weeks later, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound signal caller made his decision. McKenzie had previously announced plans to visit Northwestern, Temple, and Colorado State, but has since closed the door on official visits elsewhere.

During the 2025 season, McKenzie showcased his dual-threat capabilities, passing for 2,086 yards and 17 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. He also demonstrated his rushing prowess, amassing 942 yards and scoring 10 touchdowns on 159 attempts, achieving a completion rate of 58.2% on 351 of 603 pass attempts. Over three years as a starter at Saginaw Valley State, he accumulated a staggering 4,301 passing yards, 31 passing touchdowns, 1,673 rushing yards, and 18 rushing scores.

The urgency behind McKenzie’s signing stems from the departure of former starting quarterback Dylan Lonergan, who led the Eagles in passing during the 2025 season with 2,025 yards, 12 touchdowns, and just five interceptions on a completion percentage of 66.9%. The Eagles also lost true freshman Shaker Reisig to the transfer portal, further depleting their quarterback options. With the graduation of redshirt senior Grayson James, Boston College now finds itself with no returning players on the roster who threw a pass last season.

In his conversation with Trieu, McKenzie expressed his excitement about joining the Eagles, stating, “Boston College was the right choice for me because of the opportunity to play at the highest level against the best competition. While also getting great coaching and support from the staff. I also feel like playing for Coach O’Brien and being in his system gives me the best chance to play at the next level.” The coaching staff has reportedly assured McKenzie that the starting job is his to lose, adding to the stakes of his transition into major college football.

As the Eagles look ahead, it is expected that McKenzie may not be the only addition to their quarterback room before the transfer portal window closes on January 16, 2026. The urgency to secure depth at the position indicates that the Eagles are actively seeking additional talent to bolster their lineup for the upcoming season.

As McKenzie prepares to step onto the field for Boston College, his journey from Saginaw Valley State to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) represents a significant step in his career and an important pivot point for the Eagles’ football program. With his impressive track record, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how he adapts to the heightened competition and the coaching style of O’Brien.
