$1M Boost for Wisconsin Startups: Are You Missing Out on This Game-Changer?

In a significant boost for entrepreneurs in Northeast Wisconsin, the state is allocating over $3.5 million in grants as part of the Ignite Wisconsin initiative, which was unveiled during Governor Tony Evers’ recent State of the State address. The funding, sourced from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), aims to bolster four consortiums that focus on some of the state’s most promising startup sectors. Notably, approximately $1 million of this funding is earmarked specifically for initiatives in Northeast Wisconsin.
The Cheese Wedge Consortium, spearheaded by New North, Inc., is set to play a pivotal role in this investment. Leveraging its established network in the region, along with the resources available at Phoenix Innovation Park and UW-Green Bay, the consortium will create a cohesive platform designed to connect universities, corporations, investors, and service providers to enhance entrepreneurship.
This initiative promises to deliver a range of supportive measures, including accelerator programming and pre-seed bootcamps. Notably, it will also facilitate corporate engagement through equity investments and provide vital support such as legal and housing stipends for entrepreneurs looking to relocate to the area. Additionally, co-working spaces will be made available to these startups, alongside community outreach efforts aimed at elevating Wisconsin's entrepreneurial reputation.
The Cheese Wedge Consortium has set ambitious goals for the coming year, including the support of 21 startups and 42 participants. The initiative anticipates delivering direct funding to 18 businesses, which is expected to lead to the creation of 46 new jobs and generate an estimated $3.4 million in revenue.
“This collaboration is not just about connecting organizations; it is about creating a thriving region where ideas flourish, and solutions to the world’s challenges are born,” said Patti Habeck, president and CEO of New North, Inc. “Together, we are driving innovation and ingenuity.”
The initiatives funded through the Ignite Wisconsin program are planned to last between one and two years, ensuring a sustained effort to enhance the entrepreneurial landscape in the area.
Alongside the Cheese Wedge Consortium, three other groups around the state will also benefit from the grants:
- The Wisconsin Frontier Technology Consortium, led by the Wisconsin Technology Council
- The Wisconsin Fusion Energy Coalition, led by the 5 Lakes Institute, Inc.
- The Center for Technology Commercialization’s Foundry Factory
This significant investment and strategic collaboration reflect a growing commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship in Wisconsin, particularly in Northeast regions. As these initiatives unfold, they could play an essential role in nurturing the next wave of startups and fostering economic growth across the state.
