$10M Alabama Initiative Unleashes 9 Startups—Will Yours Be Next? Don’t Miss Out!

Halogen Ventures, a venture capital firm based in Los Angeles and led by founding partner Jesse Draper, has made its first nine investments in Alabama, marking a significant step in its initiative to bolster the state's startup ecosystem. This move comes one year after Halogen partnered with Innovate Alabama to deploy a $10 million fund aimed at supporting businesses with at least one female founder.
The investments represent an early milestone in Halogen’s strategy to drive economic growth in Alabama while reinforcing the state’s innovation landscape. Notably, Halogen Ventures became the first out-of-state venture capital firm to receive strategic funding from Alabama through Innovate Alabama as part of its third fund.
Over the past year, Halogen has focused on building relationships within Alabama’s startup community. The firm has engaged with innovation centers and research labs, and met with founders and state leaders across cities such as Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, Tuscaloosa, and Montgomery. Additionally, Halogen hosted pitch competitions designed to connect Alabama startups with national investors and explore new funding opportunities.
Despite currently ranking 50th in the United States for female entrepreneurship, Alabama's technology sector has witnessed remarkable growth. The state’s tech industry has surged approximately 50% since 2018 and is projected to double by 2030. Furthermore, venture capital investment in Alabama has jumped from just $3 million a decade ago to a striking $321 million in 2023.
As part of its commitment to invest $10 million across around 20 companies over the next two years, Halogen Ventures has already backed nine startups spanning various sectors, including artificial intelligence, healthcare, fintech, robotics, workforce technology, marketplaces, childcare, and renewable energy. These startups include:
- Moxi – A flexible childcare and coworking platform aimed at helping working families access quality childcare and community services.
- Auditocity – An HR technology company that automates compliance workflows using AI.
- Croux – An AI-powered staffing marketplace connecting job seekers with flexible, high-paying work opportunities.
- Skyfire AI – A provider of advanced analytics and AI solutions for enterprise decision-making.
- Nyad AI – An AI-powered operations intelligence platform designed to improve efficiency at scale.
- Doctours – A medical tourism marketplace focused on expanding healthcare access and price transparency.
- Yard – A developer of autonomous robotic workforce solutions for outdoor maintenance.
- KrillPay – A borderless digital wallet delivering inclusive fintech services across the U.S., Sub-Saharan Africa, and Canada.
- Accelerate Wind – A distributed wind energy company deploying small-scale turbine solutions to provide affordable clean power.
These investments deepen Halogen Ventures’ wider portfolio of more than 85 female-founded companies, which includes six unicorns valued at over $15 billion collectively. Several companies in Halogen’s portfolio, such as parking technology platform Metropolis and childcare provider Upwards, already operate within Alabama.
Halogen Ventures reported that its portfolio companies raised over $2 billion in follow-on capital just in the last quarter, underscoring the significant market interest in these emerging businesses.
“We came to Alabama not just to invest capital, but to help remove barriers, open doors, and create long-term economic opportunity. We’re seeing real momentum and capital flowing into companies that are hiring, scaling, and putting Alabama on the map as an emerging innovation hub. We are making a calculated bet on one of the most undervalued startup ecosystems in America, and we are just getting started. There is so much opportunity in Alabama and the quality of startups is next level!”

The proactive approach of Halogen Ventures, in conjunction with state initiatives like Innovate Alabama, signals a promising future for Alabama’s startup ecosystem. As the state works to overcome its ranking in female entrepreneurship, the investments made by Halogen could pave the way for future growth and innovation.
